Spring Thaw

Today is the first day of spring. It looks and feels like spring, too. A week ago, we were in a deep freeze, with temperatures well below average, and snow lying on the ground everywhere. As often happens around here, the weather can turn on a dime. Conditions have been really nice outside since the weekend and it looks like it’s going to continue for a while yet. Our daytime temperature is expected to reach 18°C (65°F) today – well above average. The spring thaw is upon us.

It doesn’t take long for anglers to start visiting the Crowsnest River, once temperatures warm and the ice begins to melt. The photo above was taken Monday afternoon upstream of Highway 507. The two fly anglers pictured in the distance had the entire stretch of water to themselves. This likely won’t last for long. Once there’s open, ice-free water flowing in the river, word spreads quickly in all directions. It appears the spring fishing season is also upon us.

    Hi Vic,

Great to see the River and hear about the warmup. Wow, 18 C. Looks like the fishermen found an area devoid of shelf ice.

    Thanks for the pictures.

      Hi Sam,

There’s lots of open water on the Crow, and more ice is coming off every day. The section downstream of Lundbreck Falls is still ice-bound, but I suspect it will all melt within a week. There are ice shelves along some of the banks. Just have to be careful out there, so you don’t go for a swim. The fishing has been productive. Hope to see you later this season. Thanks for commenting!

That sounds a much better temperature to what you have had lately. The icy river looks beautiful. Happy fishing. We are currently in Rockhampton with high humidity and an afternoon thunderstorm the last two days. Not much rain though.

      Hi Diane,

We have seen quite a change in the temperature over the past week. Everyone here is ready for spring. Hope all is well there in Australia. Thanks for visiting!
